Jets Full Page Ad Classy Move, Could be Motivational Tool

By Mike Silva ~ February 9th, 2012. Filed under: New York Giants, New York Jets, Uncategorized.

The day after the Giants paraded down the “Canyon of Heroes,” Jets fans awoke to this full-page ad in the Daily News.

There was some debate about whether the Jets did the right thing by congratulating the team that trashed talked them the last few weeks, and often is looked at as their big brother.

I don’t have a problem with it, and think it was the right thing to do. The Jets should do a mea culpa after all their trash talk this season. Covering up the Giants Super Bowl trophies when the two teams played in December looked petty. The mural wasn’t even on the field; it was located in an area only the players and media could see. When you share a stadium with the other team, there is going to be paraphernalia of your neighbor. They always had the option of building a stadium out in Queens to prevent the landlord/tenant feel of the Meadowlands. The Jets were the ones that left Shea Stadium for Giants Stadium, to begin with.

It also could be used as a motivation tool for Rex Ryan. Clearly, predicting Super Bowl Championships is something that hasn’t worked. I wrote earlier in the year that Ryan needs to use the media in a more productive manner. Maybe this is the first step in working towards challenging his team to be as great as their neighbor.

I am always of the mindset of competition. I think you can respect your opponent so much to the point that disrespect is called for. Look at the heated moments on the court when the Knicks-Heat, Knicks-Bulls, and Knicks-Pacers rivalries were in full blast. You didn’t see the Knicks taking out full page ads after being defeated. That’s different, as the Jets and Giants really don’t have a rivalry in the true sense, nor do I think they could ever create one; unless you know the NFL is planning to move the Jets to the NFC East.

If the Jets lost to them in the Super Bowl, this would be wrong and embarrassing. Classy move by Woody Johnson and company. They could even use it to show the team what they missed out on when they arrive to training camp later this summer.
