ESPN New York Has Access?

By Mike Silva ~ January 20th, 2012. Filed under: ESPN.

Great bit of investigative journalism by Bob Mantz Jr. over at Bob’s Blitz.

ESPN New York has been providing the public updates about the health of former Mets catcher and Hall of Famer, Gary Carter, from the family’s website. A common quote in these ESPN stories is “ESPNNewYork.com has been granted access.”

Apparently, “access” means they know the URL of the website. You can read updates by clicking going to CaringBridge.

Carter’s health is the most important aspect of this story, and I wish him the best during these difficult times. It would be nice if a major corporation didn’t use the situation to pretend they have a scoop when, in reality, they don’t.

The only thing I could say to defend them is the site might have been private at one point, but even then they should realize this is easily accessible to the public. Someone’s health should not be used to generate page hits for dollars.

I don’t blame the writers for this, rather it’s the editors at ESPN who should have known better.

It might be time for me to start a corporate media malfeasance tracker.
