Who Should Replace Mike Francesa in 2014?

By Mike Silva ~ January 4th, 2012. Filed under: WFAN.

Newsday’s Neil Best broke the story yesterday that Mike Francesa is “50/50″ about returning to the WFAN air waves after his contract runs out in March of 2014. Best adds that “some of the rumored replacements are Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts as well as Chris Carlin and Kimberly Jones, who have worked a number of fill-in shifts together, including morning shows last week, and former WFANer Gregg Giannotti.” Francesa couldn’t help but take a shot at one of his favorite punching bags – the Mets- as he called a reunion with his former partner Chris Russo saying there is a ”better chance that the Mets win the pennant.”

Francesa’s 1-6:30 afternoon drive slot on the FAN is the best piece of real estate in New York radio. Even with the ascension of Boomer Esiason & Craig Carton in the morning, Francesa still holds the title of the king of New York radio. His recent performance has made it more in name only, but even a lazy Francesa draws as fans now tune in to hear his inaccuracies and mock his curmudgeonly mannerisms.

So who should take over for Francesa? Should it be a solo act or another duo like the original Mike & the Mad Dog? My choice would be former ESPNer Brandon Tierney who just took the afternoon drive position at 95.7 The Game in San Francisco. The Bay Area’s only FM sports station has doubled the ratings since BT and his partner, former 49er Eric Davis, took over. Tierney is New York born and bred, knows the teams, has a level of passion unmatched, and understands the importance of bridging old and new media. I believe San Francisco is a stopover for Tierney on his way back to the Big Apple where he belongs.

As I said in my Sports Media Watchdog Awards piece, Mike’s show has become devoid of facts and he appears to spend very little time preparing about the topics he discusses. Tierney is the complete opposite and would re-energize that time slot and give it the level of excellence it was once known for.

Who would you like to see in the time slot? Have your say in our vote. Write-in candidates are welcome.
