Baseball Wives Good Mental Bubble Gum

By Mike Silva ~ December 7th, 2011. Filed under: Sports Entertainment.

Tired of trade rumors and breaking down lefty/righty splits? Don’t want to see another Bob Costas sit down with a baseball luminary on the MLB Network? If so, then watch “Baseball Wives,” which runs its second episode tonight at 9pm on Vh1.

It’s an interesting cast of wives, as there are wives of role players, stars, and borderline Hall of Famer.  Anna Benson (ex- Mets RHP Kris Benson), Tanya Grace (ex-wife of retired Chicago Cubs’ First Baseman Mark Grace), Chantel Kendall (ex-wife of Kansas City Royals’ Jason Kendall), Brook Villone (wife of Ron Villone),   Erika Monroe Williams (wife of Arizona 3b coach and former All-Star Matt Williams), and Jordana Lenz (dated Milwaukee outfielder Nyjer Morgan).

This isn’t a very complicated concept. You put a group of wealthy women with celebrity status together in a room and sparks fly. The viewer’s gets the added bonus of connecting with each, due to the fact they watched their husbands play professional baseball for their favorite team. It’s no different than the “Real Housewives” or “Basketball Wives.”

Why would I recommend this silliness? Usually, a guy and his significant other fight over the remote control. Sell her on “Baseball Wives” so you can get the best of both worlds for an hour every week. It’s the rare show that combines sports with reality TV. I don’t know many wives or girlfriends that aren’t into the latter. What a great way to compromise!

The first episode aired last week (you can watch it here), and we learned in the baseball community couples have an “85% divorce rate” to a “90% chance that your husband’s going to cheat on you,” add that to the often long-distance nature of the job and the rate of success in relationships is not in your favor. You also get to see Anna Benson do what she does best – stir the pot.

I won’t give away the first episode, but if I were Nyjer Morgan I would, for sure, think about getting a restraining order from his ex.

Watching and covering baseball can be a grind. This show is good “mental bubble gum” to break up the monotony of the 24/7/365 nature of the game.
